transformational yoga

Transformational yoga is a set of practices designed to transform the student by expanding consciousness, raising energy and increasing psychological and physical balance and health.

Transformational Yoga is based on Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga, which differs from other Yoga theory in that it more fully honours the earth and the body as sacred expressions of the divine, rather than seeing the physical realm, (as do most forms of yoga), as lower, lesser and something to rise above. Integral Yoga theory also values nature and the feminine more highly and works to bring about a male/female balance in the universe. An essential part of Transformational Yoga theory is the recognition that every moment in time and every object in the natural world is imbued with the divine. This approach could be summed up as ‘embodied spirituality’.

Classes also differ in their methods from other forms of Yoga as they include chanting to cleanse, relax and raise the vibration of the chakras and to expand and raise consciousness, in addition to the usual practices of Asanas (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), and Meditation.

With Transformational Yoga practice you still get all the physical and emotional benefits of Hatha Yoga such as improved flexibility, tone and strength, enhanced metabolic and hormonal functioning and greater peace, serenity, calmness and relaxation.

However, there is an added level, for those who wish to engage in a deeper practice, of spiritual enhancement and sense of community that is engendered by focussed chanting with a very profound intention behind it – that of the transformation of ourselves and our world into one of unity, wholeness, balance, bliss, supreme consciousness and the manifestation of the divine within the earth plane.

Transformational Yoga classes last approximately 1½ hours, but can be tailored for younger ages to 1 hour - with slightly less time focussed on poses leaving out the meditation/relaxation stage, but including the chanting, which children usually love.
