Incontinence is the inability to control excretions. The term is most commonly used in reference to urination.
Urinary incontinence is the unintentional passing of urine. It is a very common problem that is thought to affect about three million people in the UK. Anyone can experience urinary incontinence, although it is more common in people who are older. The condition affects far more women than men, and it is thought to occur in one in five women who are over 40 years of age.
Bowel incontinence is sometimes called faecal incontinence or anal incontinence. It is the uncontrolled loss of solid or liquid stools, or wind (gas) with leakage. It is often a distressing problem varying in severity from mild difficulty controlling gas (wind), to loss of control over liquid and solid stools. Bowel incontinence can affect anyone, but it is much more common in older people, particularly those with long-term health and mobility problems. While less common than urinary incontinence. it can be very embarrassing and can cause difficulties in leading normal daily life.
